In-Office Teeth Whitening

There are several factors that contribute to the natural color of our teeth. Genetics is a primary factor in that some people just have whiter teeth than others. Other lifestyle factors include tobacco use, consuming dark beverages (coffee, soda, red wine), certain medications, age, and tooth trauma.

The good news is that anyone can successfully whiten their natural teeth! In-office teeth whitening is effective at treating discoloration caused by any of the factors above. It is also effective at any age!

Teeth Whitening in Villanova, PA

The safest and most reliable way to whiten natural teeth is through a dental professional, where custom-fitted whitening trays are created and dispensed along with professional bleaching gels. Recent additives to the bleaching gels, including calcium phosphate and other minerals, can even help strengthen your teeth while they are being whitened!

Other teeth whitening treatments such as special lights, lasers, or heat applicators are not yet proven to produce reliable and consistent results. Instead, they could potentially cause lasting sensitivity or damage to the teeth. Professional whitening products from Dr. Bre Patel at Villanova Dental Group can help you accomplish a bright, radiant smile safely and gradually.

How In-Office Teeth Whitening Works

Villanova Dental Group is proud to offer Opalescence™ Boost, a powerful, award-winning solution for whiter teeth. The Opalescence™ whitening system has proven effective at producing beautiful, long-lasting results after just one quick visit.

The Opalescence™ whitening gel contains an active whitening ingredient - carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. The active oxygen molecules from the whitening agent can pass through the teeth’s enamel where they react and neutralize the discoloration as well as brighten the entire tooth.

What to Expect With In-Office Teeth Whitening

First, Dr. Bre Patel will complete a thorough exam at our Villanova dental office to determine the nature of your teeth discoloration. From there, a customized treatment plan will be provided, and any questions and concerns can be addressed.

During your treatment, a protective barrier will be applied to the gums. Afterwards, a thin layer of the Opalescence™ whitening gel is placed on the surface of the teeth for approximately 20 minutes. This is repeated two to three times during your visit, giving you a whiter and brighter smile in just one hour!

Common Teeth Whitening Questions

Will teeth whitening cause tooth sensitivity?

There is a possibility that you may experience some sensitivity as a result of teeth whitening. If tooth sensitivity does occur, it is temporary and will usually disappear within a few days after the completion of your whitening treatments. Certain desensitizing treatments and toothpastes can also be used to help treat or prevent sensitivity should it occur.

How long do teeth whitening results last?

Teeth whitening results are generally very stable and consistent, leaving you with a dazzling smile long after your treatment - from several months to even years! However, there are a few factors that can make teeth lose their brightness. Certain lifestyle habits like diet or smoking may affect the length of your whitening results. Fortunately, touch-up treatments are quick and easy, helping you get that bright smile back.

What if teeth whitening isn’t enough?

If it is determined during your exam that the stains originate from within the tooth, or if there are signs of infection or internal damage, then a more comprehensive solution might be necessary such as porcelain veneers. Unfortunately, we do not yet have a whitening product that works on old crowns, bridges, or laminate veneers.
